Principal’s Pen

Breast cancer alone kills some 458,000 people each year, according to the World Health Organization, mainly in low- and middle-income countries. It has got to be a priority to ensure that more women can access gene testing and lifesaving preventive treatment, whatever their means and background, wherever they live.

Angelina Jolie

It is hard to believe that we are now in October and it is only ten weeks to Christmas.  Our Footprinters are all out on Internship at present : some at Puma, ATTV, IntelliLAB and the rest are shooting the drama Bond on Blood with Welela TV.  We are receiving raving reports about your progress.  Well done lads.

Be aware

By Prudence Thabethe

Breast cancer is one of the leading types of cancer that affects women. Most people know about the existence of the disease however it’s not all who take action. The month of October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. This is a campaign which takes place annually to raise more awareness of the disease. Major breast cancer charities organise events such as the cycle challenge and charity dinners in order to raise funds which will go towards research on breast cancer.

The pink drive is an educational and fundraising NGO for breast cancer. They have two trucks which go around educating people in communities, corporate places and schools and they also offer free mammograms. The international symbol for breast cancer is the pink ribbon and the colour pink in general is to show support to women with breast cancer and to raise awareness too since it’s a feminine colour.

As much as awareness is raised about the disease it would be better to prevent it. Yes I know there is no sure way to prevent it however people can start taking control by exercising, watching their diet and limiting their alcohol intake. Basically living a healthy lifestyle. And I think regular check up’s would help too, it’s much better if it’s detected earlier. So people take care of yourselves and support the Pink Drive

There can be life after breast cancer. The prerequisite is early detection.” Ann Jillian.

Internship at Welela TV

Kick starting our internship at Welela Studios, we all jumped into a movie that allowed us all to understand how things work. In terms of industry role players, the roles that they play in the industry is huge.

Everything works hand in hand, like your lighting ad art department, goes with the scene they shooting.

Shooting day and night is a sacrifice, one needs to be self disciplined, committed and have passion. One must be able to take hits from the Director of photography (DOP), when he says something, you must do it-without questioning.

Working on this movie is very tiring yet great fun comes with it. We have the privilege to learn what we did not know. Working with the sound, tracks, props, etc...

Everyone is respected in his or her position, we all work as a team, for the job to get done. I think we are going to reach greater heights as young film makers in South Africa since we've been exposed to this industry.

One thing, I've learned as well is that time is crucial in this industry. If you can't keep time then, you can't be in this industry.

There's so much I've learned in this movie, that everything requires patience as there are many takes when we shooting.

An oasis of fun perched between Sandton and Alex

The one place you can experience the upmarket feel of Sandton, whilst hanging around a young and trendy crowd in the middle of Alex, is at neh! restaurant. neh! offers an attractive restaurant, club, shisa-nyama, butchery and cigar lounge in the middle of Alexander.

Good food and outstanding service is what you can expect from this winner of the 2014 American Express Platinum Fine Dining Award. The menu boasts a traditional mix of dishes including dumplings, pap, samp, with mala le mogodu, pork trotters, chicken, lamb and beef stew. Some of the interesting local colloquial have been adopted to name a few of the dishes such as tsutsumani, mangqina etc.

The butchery entrance is located outside the building where patrons can buy the meat and have it grilled at the braai spot (shisa-nyama).

In stark contrast to the soothing traditional food, the alcoholic beverage list is an ostentatious chiller featuring the likes of Hennessy, Courvoisier, Moet Rose Imperial, La Motte Millennium, Meerlust Rubicon as well as local and imported beers.

Boasting a 150-seater restaurant on the first floor and a series of elegant private VIP lounges above, neh! offers the most ideal space for corporate functions, business meetings and friends get-togethers.

Walking into neh! you will be struck by the flamboyant decor that gives this restaurant an energetic yet comfortable African atmosphere. Indigenous artefacts which have been collected from around the continent create an ambiance that is simultaneously welcoming, stylish and relaxed. An inviting bar area  by the entrance create a buzz throughout the ground floor and set the tone for an exciting dining experience, while the patio provides the perfect perch to catch a glimpse of the stark lifestyle differences between the glitzy Sandton and humble living conditions of the people of Alexandra.

neh! restaurant and lounge offers an attractive, stylish and up-market feel that draws political bigwigs, celebrities, businessmen and a young and trendy crowd that mostly fills the club’s dance floor on weekends. There’s no formal dress code but patrons know how to dress up for the place, with women in their elegant dresses and stilettos and guys often looking snazzy in smart-casual gear.

Revellers come in hoards to celebrate the start of the weekend from Friday evenings, where the surrounding streets and the parking lot will be graced by classy sports cars that most only dream about. The in-house DJ often keeps the crowd dancing to hip-hop and house tunes until dawn the next morning.

Neh! is located at number 54, 4th Street, Marlboro and the restaurant is open daily and serves breakfast from 07:00 a.m.

Adrenaline vs Planning

By Keenen Leqoalana

In the media industry, both adrenaline and planning are needed to get a project delivered, but like all things, a healthy balance is a much easier way to achieve not only delivering your project, but making sure that you are in your right state of mind.

In my view there is no such thing as too much planning, you can never
over plan anything because the golden rule with production is “everything and anything that can and will go wrong usually does”, so if you have
plan B, in theory, you're sorted.

On the other side there’s adrenaline. An important element in the
production mix. I see adrenaline as a turbo boost, a quick much needed
injection when the chips are down, when you need to pull an all-nighter,
when you have to perform at your very best. The problem comes in when adrenaline becomes a normal thing to depend on.  People have 'given in' to the dark side of adrenaline - using it more like a shot of an energy drink to get through the production, than as part of the process. Adrenaline becomes the process. People become too dependent on adrenaline rush to get them through the difficulty of a production and the planning tends to slip by way the side.

But like most 'drugs' that give you a high, there is a price to pay: which is the
low. And this is the disadvantage for a lot of people who are in
production tend to fail.

Proper planning works well from the beginning of a production it will also
keep you in the industry for longer and you get to avoid that the ultimate
price that a lot of us pay in the end - burnout.
