So at minus zero I guess winter is finally upon us.  It feels as if during July we should be hibernating, but

Instead it is out with the winter woolies and hot water bottles.

July has been a very busy month with all students busy with their reccees, shoots and editing of their

Inserts for the Channel.

It is with pride that we congratulate the Broadcast School at Spirit Word Ministries in the North West Province on completion of their International Diploma in Media Techniques. Well done!

So remember, even though it is cold:

Equipment arrives in Brazil

Creating Opportunities

By Sheryl Matthews

June and July have been packed with a wide variety of sport from the FIFA World Cup to the Durban July. Being the coldest months in the year, what better way to spend a weekend or evening chilling on the couch with hot chocolate (or something stronger for the not so faint hearted), watching Brazil being thrashed by Germany.

So how, you ask yourself is this related to Footprint Media Academy. Well let me enlighten everyone to the career possibilities in this industry. Without going into great detail, the FIFA World Cup made use of 340 HD Cameras, 48 production switchers and 816 video monitors. This equates to 340 camera operators and 47 vision mixers required for the duration of the World Cup. This does not include the crew required for audio, vision control, EVS, engineering, etc.

Sony, a partner of the FIFA World Cup chartered 48 flights each containing 4.5 tons of equipment which was flown in for the FIFA World Cup and used 500 000 meters of cabling.

Imagine just for a minute what would happen if this equipment arrives and there is nobody to set it up, operate and maintain it for the duration of the tournament. Quite simply….there will be no soccer!

Thousands upon thousands of technical, operations and production crew from around the globe (including South Africa) were flown into Brazil to ensure the smooth running of the tournament.

Admittedly there are no productions of this magnitude which take place in South Africa regularly, however, there are constantly productions on the go, whether it be sport, news, drama, etc. This industry is in desperate need of good technical, operations and production crew. There is a career to be made in this industry and Footprint Media Academy continually strives to produce and introduce new talent into this ever changing, never ending industry we call Television.

#Movie Experience In South Africa Will Never Be The Same Again!

STER- KINEKOR, CINE PRESTIGE, SANDTON

Nowadays people prefer to watch movies in the comfort of their homes, on their laptops and some even on their cell phones and tablet devices. Main reason for this trend is due to the high cinema’s prices and poor customer service. So what does South Africa’s biggest cinema company decide to do? They make a decision that will change the movie experience in this country for ever. They increase the prices even further! Yep now you can pay about R120.00 for a movie ticket. You can relax though, for what you are now paying for is an extreme makeover not only in the quality of the movie you watch but also the quality in which you watch the movie. Ster-Kinekor has now launched their new line of cinemas at Cine Prestige and IMAX 3D.  Cine Prestige is the pioneer in first class luxury in a cinematic experience. Movie lovers get to enjoy the latest movies in the most comfortable way.  Footprint Media TV was invited to attend the launch and it was a marvellous experience.

This exclusive cinema format epitomises film viewing heaven and pure luxury rolled into one. Audiences can now relax in large leather chair; at the touch of a button from the control panel the seats unfold into a comfortable reclining position to watch the best blockbusters on the big screen and all this while you indulge yourself on a variety of gourmet platters. Yes, that’s right, from coffee to cakes and even breakfast options. We experienced this at Ster-Kinekor launch event of their new Sandton cinema. This cinema consists of 52 seats, mixed with single and automatic recliner that just brag in comfort. Each seat is fitted with a snack tray for all your indulgences and gets better; it is refrigerated to keep your drinks cool throughout the movie.

IMAX, THE GROVE MALL, PRETORIA

For the extreme movie lovers, those who crave the ecstasy of a true cinematic experience, have no fear! Ster-Kinekor theatres has now partnered with IMAX in launching their new line of IMAX cinemas. The opening of this impressive and futuristic technological new theatre is the second IMAX cinema in the country with Durban being the first. All IMAX lovers in Gauteng now have the opportunity to watch all their favourite blockbusters at the IMAX in Pretoria. What IMAX loses in comfort, it makes up for in cinematic quality. You will not take one notice about seats when you gaze your eyes at the super wide screen. “Every man owning a man cave will want one of these” said audience member.

As we members of the audience we could not wait for all the speeches and proceedings to finish so the movie could get on its way. As soon as the lights went off and the sound came on, all of a sudden the world outside no longer mattered. All the audience cared about was what was playing on the screen.  I personally felt as if those were the shortest 3 hours of my life. State of the art technology and crystal clear sound was all worth it. All you Johannesburg people should take the drive to the Grove Mall, it is completely worth it. Those who are still sceptical about IMAX, fret not, for in the year 2015 Ster-Kinekor brings Imax to the Eastgate Mall.

National Film & Video Foundation Bursary Program Is Now Open!

One of the most popular queries we get every day that is approximately 3 out of every 5 enquiries at Footprint Media Academy is whether we offer bursaries. Unfortunately we do not offer bursaries yet, but we have a friendly cash payment plan and we do suggest taking up a student loan, however most students prefer bursaries, maybe the thought of paying back the high bank interest rates on student loans put them off.  Here is an opportunity for the diehard bursary fans and anyone out there that would like to study Film or any Television related studies and is having a hard time getting tuition fees.

The National Film and Video Foundation mostly referred to as NFVF offers bursaries each year to Matriculants who want to pursue film/TV related to study for a degree or a diploma as full time students at an accredited tertiary institution. The National bursary opens every year from the beginning of June to the end of August. The 2014 application period is now open and will close on the 29th of August 2014. Most of you out there who have tried to apply for a bursary or a scholarship know the process is lengthy and the requirements are hefty. The NFVF requirements are minimal and the application form is very simple to fill in. You can find all the requirements needed on the back of the application form with clear instructions on how to apply; again it is very straightforward for the applicant. The bursary covers tuition fees and accommodation where applicable, 100% is paid for first years, and 80% from second year onward and you do not have to pay back after you are done with your studies because it is a grant.

One of the key requirements, is you must have applied at recognised Film and Television Institution in South Africa, be accepted and have proof of this. Why don’t you start this step today and apply at Footprint Media Academy that offers a 2 year City and Guilds approved International Diploma in Media Techniques. http://www.felinetech.co.za/

Microphones are devices that convert sound waves into audio signals. The Boom and the lapel microphones are mostly used in the media industry.

A Boom microphone is a directional microphone that is attached to a pole. It is sensitive enough to pick up unwanted vibrations such as unsteady hands. The pole is often called a fish pole. The boom microphone is often used for group conversations, as they can be positioned so that everyone's voice can be heard. Boom microphones are operated by the boom operators.

A lapel microphone is a small dynamic microphone. It attaches to clothing and takes the place of a more static-position microphone. It is small enough to be held between two fingers. The microphone is plugged into a console clipped to the belt or otherwise attached to clothing

306 insert project

Hair We Go Ladies

By Prudence Thabethe

Having my very first shoot was the most exciting thing ever, having the responsibility to organise and direct my own insert titled "Hair We Go Ladies" was really fun but not so easy. "Hair We Go Ladies" is an insert which enlightens viewers all about hair extensions and offers hair tips on how to treat your hair. We had the shoot on the 11 June at Ruutos Hair in Randburg. It went very well, I felt a bit ambivalent as I just was more focused on making it a success.

My crew and talent were cooperative and we worked well as a team. I loved the fact that they understood what I wanted which just made things much easier. Through this shoot I realised how crucial Pre-production is, planning beforehand makes things simpler and everything will be smooth sailing. At the moment I'm busy with the editing of the programme, I'm sure the final product is something to look forward to.

And just a few tips for a successful shoot plan well before hand, make it a point to obtain permission, last but not least work well with your team and you will have superbly greaaaaat shoot.

Killer drugs

By Billy Hansen

Drugs

The world is pulling the wool over their eyes when it comes to reality. People are living a lie; there is so much death in the streets of Johannesburg, because of cheap street drugs.

The generation of our parents were alcoholics and nothing has changed, there are still alcoholics. In our generation today, our youth's new crutch is drugs! The streets are full of children with no homes they have nothing else but the drugs to keep them going on with the everyday robbing’s and killings for the drug.

People are complaining about how bad it is out there, but are too scared to say anything, so I won’t go further. We all need to realize what’s going on in our city, and I tell you its bad out there the drugs are everywhere, and it is only our generation that will be able to make a change. We the youth are the world today, let’s put our feet down and stop what is happening, because of drugs in the streets.

‘Team’ Internship experience at ATTV

By Keenen Leqoalana

Moving from school to the corporate world for Internship was not so hard, because with Footprint Media Academy, I was already set in a working environment from the first day.

I am finding my way within a big production company here at ATTV, where I am currently an intern. I do not find it  difficult to cope as the people here are so friendly, some may say it’s only because I’m new J well I don’t think so. Within the few weeks, I have realized that there is no I in a “TEAM”.

It doesn’t really matter where you come from but what really matters at that point in time, is the production, getting it done and delivered and you can’t do it alone. Within the team you find people that are stronger than you are, it doesn’t really matter; I’ve learnt to ask if I don’t know something and speak up if I need help.

My days here end very well, it brings joy to my heart when a person says ‘Thank you’. Even though I feel, I didn’t do much. The rest of the team doesn’t see it the way I do.

Remember the smallest things in life are not small. That small thing can either break you or make you. You are only good as your last production.

Africa fashion week – Nigeria 2014

By Kathy Kgoroeadira

Africa fashion week might have taken place over a month ago but that’s not going to stop me from writing about it. It happened on the 18th of May at the Eko Hotel, Victoria Island Lagos, one of the biggest events to take place in our continent.

Description: Description: Prime Circle – Let the Night In

There were amazing designers that showcased their designs including my personal favourite Elikem who was the ambassador with his fiancé Pokello who you might remember from Big Brother Africa (The Chase) 2013.

Description: Description: http://www.fashionghana.com/site/wp-content/uploads/elikem-the-tailor-africa-fashion-week-nigeria-13.jpg

Here’s his killer show stopper that fiancé Pokello modelled down the runway. Some people weren’t too crazed about it because they feel it was too simple and he’s capable of so much more but I completely loved it. Simple and elegant is always a great combo.

Here are some other ensembles from designers like Zizi Cardow and Ade Bakare that I personally loved

For an event that took place for the first time in Nigeria, I think it was a great success judging from the feedback people have been giving. I’m a great supporter of anything African and I feel as Africans need to come together and support each other’s work so as to take our continent to greater heights. Let’s support each other, we have some great talent here….
